As the author states in his Preface, the title of this book is a pré cis of the more descriptive `The Maintenance of Electrical, Instrument and Radio Systems Installed in Aircraft and the Overhaul of their Component Parts`. The procedures of maintenance and overhaul must, however, presuppose a sound perception of how things work, and for this reason sufficient description of the methods of operation of the devices is included for the benefit of those who have not yet met them.
The book is written for those who wish to make a career in this side of aircraft engineering and for personnel already working in the field. Even those specializing in one aspect should have some knowledge of adjacent sectors in view of the inevitable merging of techniques to meet new demands. Section I attempts to explain the underlying technical factors in the philosophy of aircraft maintenance, and also provides the potential supervisor with a perspective of the administrative pattern on which the structure of a sound maintenance organization is built.
