The physicochemical processes in the active medium of gas-discharge lasers emitting at vibrational-rotational transitions of the carbon monoxide molecule are described.  Methods for controlling molecular reactions and conditions for maintaining the chemical equilibrium of a laser gas mixture in a closed working volume are discussed.  The influence of the components of the working mixture (readily ionizable impurities, residual gases and products of plasma-chemical reactions) on the parameters of and the longevity of the laser.  The factors and mechanisms limiting the preservation and reproducibility of the parameters of active elements are stated, and methods for controlling these parameters are shown.  The principles of operation and design features of CO lasers with sealed-off active elements, the problems of creating reliable and durable laser emitters, and the design and manufacturing technology of industrial devices are described.  The main technical and operational parameters of industrial lasers (emission spectra and their isotopic variations, long-term amplitude power instability, methods of optical and electrochemical control of the spectral "autograph" of the laser) are presented.  The use of CO lasers in experimental scientific installations, technological equipment and medical equipment is described.  For scientists,
